About Wags

Dr. Greg Waggoner

"Wags"

Dr. Greg Waggoner is the President/Owner of Rocky Mountain Athletic Consulting Services (RMACS).  Greg combines his expertise, experience and success as a teacher, coach, administrator, business owner and leader to bring athletic, education and other organizations unique, powerful seminars and speeches.  Some of the more common topics include team building; fund-raising, marketing and promotions; marketing student-athletes to colleges (including the NCAA Clearinghouse/Eligibility Center); motivational topics, risk management; Title IX; parent relations and wrestling clinics.

Dr. Waggoner holds a B.A degree in Physical Education with a minor in Business Administration; an M.A. in Secondary Education and an Ed. D. in Sport Administration. “Wags” is a native of northwest Colorado.  He was born and raised in Steamboat Springs and he has lived most of his life on the Western Slope of Colorado.  Greg’s wife, Gloria, is a high school teacher and an Activities Director.  They have two grown children, Dillon and Destiny that have recently graduated from college and are former collegiate athletes.  Greg has been an educator for over 28 years and is currently in his 14th year as Athletic Director at Western State College of Colorado (WSC) in Gunnison.  He coached wrestling at both the high school and college levels and was an

assistant football coach at the college level.  He served as an Associate Professor of Exercise and Sport Science and Head Wrestling Coach at WSC for 12 years.  Dr. Waggoner is professionally active and is currently the Second Vice-President of the NCAA D-II Athletic Director’s Association, current member of the National Association for Collegiate Director’s of Athletics (NACDA) Executive Committee, and Past Chair of the NCAA D-II Wrestling Committee and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Athletic Director Council.  Greg is also active in community service organizations and activities in the Gunnison Valley.

In the first 13 years that Greg has been the Athletic Director at WSC the athletic department has experienced significant transformation, progress and success.  Some of these changes include the implementation of a highly successful comprehensive fund-raising program, including a corporate partner program; formation of the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame; implementation of numerous significant capital construction projects; and the implementation of a merchandise licensing program.  The broad-based successes of the Mountaineer Athletic Programs in the past 13 years have been unprecedented, as the Mountaineers have won 10 national team championships, 68 national “top 10” team finishes and numerous national playoff appearances in that time span.  The Mountaineers have finished consistently in the “top 5” in the annual NCAA D-II Director’s Cup National All-Sport contest and they are one of only two NCAA D-II institutions to have placed in the “top 25” in each of the first 12 years of the existence of the contest.  Since there are nearly 300 NCAA D-II programs nation-wide, this ranks WSC among the very best overall athletic programs in the nation!  Student-athletes under Greg as a coach or administrator have consistently maintained among the best graduation rates in the NCAA D-II.

Under the direction of Dr. Waggoner, Western State College Athletics has improved their fund-raising by over 400% in corporate and booster revenues and all WSC athletic fund-raising and auxiliary enterprises combined have grown exponentially over the past 13 years.  Additionally, many special events have been added to the Mountaineer calendar and summer athletic camps have grown tremendously in recent years.  The WSC Athletic programs annual budget is 41% privately generated and this compares to the NCAA D-II average of 24%.  Other recent progress includes over $6 Million in athletic facility improvements and over $12 Million has been raised in private funds for the athletic department in the past 13 years.  These accomplishments are particularly interesting, as Western State College is a small college located in a small isolated community.

Greg enjoyed success as a teacher and coach at both the high school and college levels.  His college teams consistently finished in the “top 10” nationally in the NCAA D-II and were the RMAC Champions and Colorado Collegiate Wrestling Champions numerous times.  Several of Coach Waggoner’s wrestlers won individual All-American titles and National Championships.  Waggoner was named the “Colorado Collegiate Coach of the Year” in 1995 and 97.
